What is Peer Pressure?

Peer Pressure or social pressure is the effect on an individual who gets encouraged doing things that their peers and friends suggest forgetting their values, believes, behavior, and morals.

Children and adolescents have a higher probability to get themselves indulge in activities of these kinds. This has a great influence on their life and its effects can have drastic changes and recovering back from them can be very painful. Peer pressure can be both positive and negative it’s just a matter of fact that on what side you are. It is very easy to drive down the valley but difficult to ride up the same it is easy to get deviated towards negative things rather than facing difficulties.

Effect on Children and Adolescents

Children always have an urge to follow up trends and find a group of they have common in and they do follow what they do. There are many things that they follow such as celebrities, influencers, what their friends follow, and it can have a good as a well bad impact on them and their minds. In teenagers, we do many things that our friends do, and we get influenced, and sometimes it affects us a lot. If we look at the negative side of these children get involved in things such as cheating, bluffing, bullying, and worse like getting involved in drugs, consumption of alcohol, sexually physical things. All this can have a vigorous impact on their lives that can lead to both emotional as well as mental health issues.

SCIENTIFIC RESEARCHES AND NEURAL MECHANISM

If we go through the neurological perspective, then we find out that many things do affect it. Medial Prefrontal Cortex (mPFC) and the striatum play a vital role in figuring out values out of action. mPFC gets active when we determine socially tagged objects which are one who has opinions of peers, similarly, striatum signifies the values related to them. Many experiments have been conducted with different subjects and group who in peer pressure changes their answer even tough questions are very easy to answer. An experiment was conducted which asked which one the bigger line is? and the subject was correct with the answer but as soon as others started giving another wrong answer it changed the mind as he was alone but correct and others were wrong but together and then the subject changed his mind and went with them. This shows that creating peer pressure can let us change our own correct decisions.

SOCIAL MEDIA

Social Media is another platform that has a whole new era of influencers that have created an arena for peer pressure. You follow trends and influencers and there is a competition between friends that what they acquire. We have a whole new world out there with both positive and negative things whose involvement in the life of people change them.

OTHER EFFECTS

Academics and self-esteem are the two different core bases that get affected. Getting involved in different activities have a substantial impact on minds and behavior which directly targets the roots of academics. We get a lot of things from around and we couldn’t think of what we are and go against our will and it let us feel low self- esteem and this emotional and mental stress can lead children into issues and worst like suicidal ideation.

EDUCATION

Peer pressure can construct or destruct thinking of a person, their habits can face bad consequences in the future so teaching and giving education regarding this will help a lot to cope up with this. Children face different things both emotionally and mentally, this can change their lives, and giving them direction will help them a lot. Peer pressure can be helpful and unobliging at the same time it is on you and your thinking the way you take it.

As per research, 85% of success in life is determined through personality skills. Personality, leadership & intelligence define your progressive future. Smart parents invest not just for their children’s future, but also in developing their child’s inherent potential and personality skills. It enables success.
